President Tinubu Inaugurates Justice Kekere-Ekun As 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria

In a historic ceremony, President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) at the State House Council Chambers. Justice Kekere-Ekun took her oaths at 11:38 am and assumed her seat at 11:45 am, marking the beginning of her tenure.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment follows the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola and her nomination by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on August 15. She becomes the second female CJN in Nigerian history, after Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar (2012-2014).

Notable attendees at the ceremony included justices of the Supreme Court, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, leadership of the House of Representatives, represented by Prof Julius Ihonbvere, Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwoolu, immediate past CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Justice Kekere-Ekun will serve in an acting capacity until her confirmation by the Senate.
