Kindly share this story

The Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, addressed false claims about the government’s policy on tertiary education.

He clarified the government’s support for public universities and explained the role of the private sector in a speech at the 2024 Second Quarter Engagement with Heads of Department and Chief Executives of Parastatals of the Ministry, held at the Conference Hall of the Ministry.

This was disclosed in a press release by the Director of Information, Budget and National Planning, Folasade Boriowo.

The statement reads: “Contrary to the false narratives circulating in the Media, the Federal Government is not selling off Universities to private investors.

“Our administration values Public institutions and is focused on reforms that will elevate Nigeria’s Educational standard to a global level. We have introduced policies that encourage International investment and collaboration in our Tertiary Institutions, fostering global competitiveness.

“Prof. Mamman highlighted the success of similar initiatives in Asia, where International institutions have significantly raised Educational standards and brought substantial economic benefits. By opening up our Universities to international operators, we aim to replicate these successes and transform Nigeria into an Educational hub.

“Echoing the sentiment of collaboration, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, delivered a welcome address emphasizing the importance of a unified approach to tackling Educational challenges. He underscored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s prioritization of Education as a key instrument for poverty eradication and the need for Graduates to be globally marketable and relevant.

“Dr. Sununu highlighted the African Union’s focus on Education for lifelong learning, urging open dialogue and respect for diverse opinions to achieve the President’s Educational mandate. Regular consultations and collaborative efforts are essential in addressing the challenges we face and ensuring our Educational system meets International standards.

“This engagement reflects the Government’s strategic vision to harness both local and international expertise, ensuring that Nigeria’s Education sector thrives in the 21st century.”
