The Super Eagles have landed in Kano after departing Libya due to the poor treatment meted them by the Libyan authorities.
Nigerian officials and players arrived in Libya on Sunday but were stranded at the Al Abraq International Airport for over 13 hours. They slept at the facility and were denied access to food and the internet.
In a video seen online, the players were captured chanting songs of freedom depicting happiness.
Super Eagles Captain, William Troost-Ekong on his X handle, wrote: “Back home safe & sound. Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken.
“Throw at us what you want, it’s in our blood to overcome. I’ve seen a lot in my 10 years with this group, but nothing like this, an experience that has brought us even closer together.”
According to reports, the players have completed immigration formalities, and are set for onward flights to Abuja and Lagos.
President Bola Tinubu, deeply moved by the inhuman treatment endured by the Super Eagles of Nigeria at a Libyan airport, has warmly welcomed their safe return to Nigeria. The harrowing experience of the national football team at the hands of their hosts and the Libyan authorities prompted the Nigerian Football Federation to withdraw the Super Eagles from the scheduled match on Tuesday.
The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has opened an investigation into the Super Eagles ordeal in Libya and has threatened to sanction those found violating its statutes and regulations.
CAF said this in a statement today. CAF said it was concerned over the development and has reached out to both Libyan and Nigerian authorities.
