Retired Nigerian national team goalkeeper, Peter “Apo” Fregene, has passed away at 77 after a prolonged illness.
Segun Odegbami, a football administrator and former teammate, confirmed the development on his verified Facebook page on Sunday night.
His condition sparked community support, led by his colleagues, who called for better welfare for Nigerian sports heroes. Fregene had been on life support machine since last week.
The legendary Green Eagles goalkeeper also represented Nigeria at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico.
