The Lagos State Government will implement a ban on single-use plastics, including sachet water and PET bottles, starting January 2025. The decision aims to tackle the growing plastic waste crisis impacting the environment.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, dropped the hint at a stakeholders’ workshop and awareness of the implementation of the ban on usage of Styrofoam and SUPs for packaging in Lagos State.
He said that the ban is part of measures by the state government to put in place policy guidelines for plastic utility in further ensuring a sustainable management of plastic waste, healthy and safe environment.
The Special Adviser on The Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, who represented Mr. Wahab said that the policy guideline would be backed up with a legal framework.
He disclosed that at present, Lagos generates about thirteen thousand tonnes of waste products monthly, with plastics making up over sixty per cent.
Meanwhile, stakeholders in the sector have demanded phase implementation rather than outright enforcement for effective and efficient compliance as well as giving it human face considering the present economic hardship.
In January 2024 the state government banned the use of styrofoam in the state.
