Lagos Embarks On Cleanup Exercise At Freedom Park,To Extend Initiative to Other Tourist Sites

The Lagos State Government has embarked on a Community Service Cleanup and Rejuvenating Initiative at Freedom Park, Lagos Island, one of the Tourism sites of the statw.

The initiative was led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, in collaboration with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Speaking to newsmen during the exercise, Aregbe explained that the exercise is to restore the site to its original form to make it appealing to tourists and restore sanity.

He explained that the objective of the Community Initiative to Clean up the Park is aimed at achieving a cleaner and breathable environment for tourism to thrive in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration, stressing that the exercise focuses on taking care and refurbishing the tourist sites as well as taking into cognisance the need for environmental conservation.

The Special Adviser stated that the Ministry is doing the cleanup exercise in collaboration with the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), adding that the initiative would be extended to other tourist assets and communities across the state.

His words, “This Clean-up exercise will reduce littering and wastes at tourist sites, give a new facelift to the tourist sites thereby attracting more tourists leading to an increase in economic benefits to the State”, Aregbe said.

He also informed of the need to sustain awareness campaigns and clean-up exercises through regular community events and activities, establish a community-led committee to oversee environmental conservation efforts, explore funding opportunities to support ongoing initiatives and expand impact.

The Special Adviser thanked all those who supported him on the initiative, especially the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who facilitated the collaboration with LAWMA and other relevant stakeholders, including the host community of Freedom Park.

On her part, the Chief Operating Officer, Freedom Park, Ms. Iyabo Aboaba, who was present during the clean-up exercise, expressed delight, noting that the initiative will help in improving the facility so that it can better serve its purpose .

While emphasising the need to extend the gesture to other tourist sites, Aboaba thanked the Lagos State Government for coming up with the clean-up exercise and pleaded for more improvement at the park.
