At least 42 people have been confirmed dead, with several others still missing, after a dam collapsed in Kenya, following heavy rains across the country, local police said Monday.
A regional governor expects the death toll to rise significantly after the dam burst in southern Kenya’s Mai Mahui following weeks of devastating rainfall.
Homes were swept away and roads were cut off following the catastrophe.
Dozens are still missing as rescue teams continue sifting through swathes of debris looking for survivors.
Officials have blamed El Nino weather system – that has wreaked havoc across the region, leaving 155 dead in Tanzania.
