The China General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC) in Nigeria has addressed the row surrounding the alleged discrimination against Nigerians who were barred from shopping at a Chinese supermarket in Abuja.
The Chinese chamber of commerce in Nigeria denied the racism allegations while clarifying that the estate where the incident happened is not just a supermarket but also has offices and homes.
The supermarket is in the residential area, not directly related to the Chamber.
They said residents follow security rules for visitors. They regretted the altercation at the gate but said it does not represent their views.
The Chamber noted that they are all about equality and friendship between China and Nigeria.
The Chinese-owned supermarket in Nigeria’s capital has now been shut by the authorities over allegations that it denies entry to African shoppers.
The supermarket in Abuja allegedly “exclusively permits individuals of Chinese descent to enter”, Nigeria’s consumer protection watchdog said on X.
Boladale Adeyinka, an official at Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), said that the watchdog had launched an investigation into the allegations.
This follows widespread outrage on social media after some Nigerians shared their experiences of allegedly being turned away by security when they attempted to go to the shopping center.
