Rwandan opposition figure Victoire Ingabire’s attempt to lift a ban on her participation in the upcoming presidential election has been blocked by a Rwandan court.
Ingabire, who spent eight years in prison on charges related to state security and criticism of the 1994 genocide, was released in 2018.
However, Rwandan law prohibits individuals jailed for over six months from running in elections. Ingabire, an outspoken critic of President Paul Kagame, claims the court’s decision is politically motivated.
President Kagame has faced criticism for alleged opposition crackdowns, and there is currently only one other candidate for the upcoming election.
